Politics and the Church

On the 1st of August 2026, AC NSW held its monthly public meeting. Each meeting provides a forum to promote the work of AC NSW and to hear from a variety of Christian workers, organisations, and ministries.

Our guest speaker for the month of August was Trevor Murphy, a pastor from the Christian Revival Church. Trevor has extensive experience as a pastor, and has served in a number of church leadership roles throughout regional NSW and Australia. He has also served on the mission field in Serbia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. Trevor gave an excellent talk outlining how pastors and churches can and should contribute to politics in Australia. His talk was highlighted by many examples from his own work as a pastor.

Churches and Christian political parties have distinct but complementary roles in strengthening society. Churches provide spiritual leadership, pastoral care, community support and a voice for compassion and justice. Christian political parties seek to translate Christian principles into public policy and democratic action. Greater cooperation can help address issues such as family breakdown, poverty, homelessness, addiction, social isolation and the protection of human dignity. Such cooperation should respect the independence and responsibilities of each institution, while encouraging shared dialogue, practical partnerships and mutual support. By working together where appropriate, churches and Christian political parties can provide a stronger, more credible Christian contribution to Australian public life.

Things to pray for

• Wisdom — that Christian leaders and politicians would distinguish biblical principles from personal or partisan interests. (James 1:5)
• Unity — that churches and Christian political movements would cooperate without compromising their distinct roles. (Ephesians 4:3)
• Integrity — that Christian representatives would act honestly, humbly and courageously. (Proverbs 29:2)
• Godly leadership — that those in positions of authority would govern with justice, righteousness and compassion. (Micah 6:8)
• Courage to defend the vulnerable — particularly children, families, the poor, elderly and marginalised. (Proverbs 31:8–9)
• A gracious public witness — that Christians would engage respectfully with those who disagree with them. (1 Peter 3:15–16)
• Revival and spiritual renewal — recognising that lasting social transformation ultimately requires changed hearts, not merely changed laws. (Ezekiel 11:19–20)
